Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young kid. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed throughout the day for the love of literature, art and theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was socially aware and showed her how to use the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and brought up. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she became interested in production for the broadcast media. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house that belonged to a member on the jury. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
